The Waste Management Pyramid, described in the 1990 Pollution Prevention Act, origigynally developed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Illustrates the proper order to follow when dealing whit waste to archive the least harmful environmental results.

Therefore there are six solid waste management strategies that rank the most preferable ways to address waste. Source reduction or waste prevention, which includes reuse, is the best approach, followed by recycling. Waste that cannot be prevented or recycled can be combusted with or without energy recovery and finally disposed by landfilling.

The goal is to move solid waste management up the hierarchy, away from landfilling and towards source reduction.
